On 13 October 2024 , Dentons Lee signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Oxford Martin Programme on Net Zero Policy and Regulation (the “Oxford Net Zero Hub”), led by Director Thomas Hale. This MOU formalizes their collaboration to create a comprehensive overview of the regulatory and legal landscape shaping corporate net-zero (carbon neutrality) activities and objectives, with an effort to support the development of best practices for net-zero policies around the world.
Under the MOU, Dentons Lee, led by senior attorneys Hailey Hye-In JIN and John JungKyum KIM, will actively contribute to the Annual Survey for the Net Zero Policy Monitor by the Oxford Net Zero Policy Tracker with a focus on South Korea. As part of the Oxford Net Zero Hub, the Oxford Net Zero Policy Tracker monitors global progress and identifies effective policies and challenges in achieving net-zero targets, with an emphasis on advancing the 10th recommendation of the United Nations High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) to accelerate the formation of net-zero policies, especially for non-state actors.
The survey results from Dentons Lee provides a detailed picture of the current regulatory and legal framework underpinning corporate net-zero activities in South Korea. By offering comparative data to evaluate carbon neutrality policies across countries, Dentons Lee and the Oxford Net Zero Hub contribute to academic research and policy recommendations that are expected to drive necessary and meaningful changes in climate control action and foster international cooperation in the pursuit of net-zero objectives.
Dentons Lee is committed to continue the collaborative survey through 2025 and 2026 and further support the global push for sustainable climate action, control and regulatory alignment towards a net zero world. This partnership marks an important step in the efforts of both organizations to contribute to the global policy discussion on climate change and ensure an effective legal framework for achieving net-zero goals.
