Senior Attorneys Christina Jiwon Park and Seung-Hun Lee participated as expert panelists at the 30th Annual General Meeting of the International Association of Korean Lawyers (IAKL) held at Sungkyunkwan University School of Law from September 14th until the 17th.

In the corporate law session entitled "Which grass is greener? In-house v. Law Firm", Christina shared insights on how private practitioners can provide even more valuable advice to their clients. Having worked as both an in-house counsel and a private practitioner at multiple companies and firms, Christina also provided thoughtful views on a variety of related topics including current trends in the legal market, differences in work environments between Korea and other countries, advantages and disadvantages of being an in-house counsel and a private practitioner in terms of growth and work cultures, and the expectations and realities that lawyers have about their workplace, and drew enthusiastic responses from the Korea-licensed and foreign-licensed lawyers who participated in the session.

In the family law session entitled "Toward a sustainable future: Is our Child Support System enough for nurturing the next generation?", Seung-Hun presented on multiple aspects of the Japanese legal system in relation to securing performance of child support obligations for children of divorced families, national subsidies, and sanctions available for those who fail to pay child support. Seung-Hun also pointed to the recent amendments to the Japanese Civil Enforcement Law that is aimed to support children of divorced families.

IAKL was founded in 1988, with membership comprised of Korean lawyers from around the world, to promote the rights and interests of overseas Koreans and protect the activities of Korean companies. IAKL holds annual general meetings and academic conferences each year, alternating venues between Korea and abroad. The 30th Annual General Meeting was held under the theme of 'Defying Gravity and Soaring Together - Toward a Sustainable Future' and was attended by about 400 lawyers from 20 countries around the world, and included multiple sessions on topics including finance, international trade, human rights, and labor.
